Donostia / San Sebastian extraordinaire – Bar Desy

When in Donostia / San Sebastian you will find many options of restaurants, but not many small ones that match Bar Desy. You can start your day there with a coffee and tapas or end your day there with a drink and tapas. Bar Desy is a father and son operation and is one great place to eat and meet locals. Bar Desy offers a well rounded variety of tapas both hot and cold from various fish items to meatballs.

The cod cheeks were pretty good and would make a great sandwich. Actually everything was really good but the fresh cod fillets, cod cheeks, squid with lemon, white wine and fresh bread were my favorite things besides the generous hospitality.

These guys take great care of their customers. Located at Ronda 4, a couple blocks back from the surf beach and a couple blocks over from the river. Bar Desy is a great place to get to know the tapas deal. The staff is great as is the food.

“Wait until they discover Il Barroccio.” the Dude of Food.

It’s true what they say about Il Barroccio on Trip Advisor and elsewhere on the internet. It is just a matter of time before folks will discover and be flocking to Il Barroccio . It is located just around the corner from a huge crowded and overpriced plaza and is an easily found hidden gem.

The Dude of Food tried ‘the homemade noodles wrestling with soft chucks of wild boar in the seriously delicious sauce, please.’

It looked unbelievable and truly tasted better as it made it’s way over my taste buds followed by a bath of decadent Tuscan red wine.

Giovanni and Roberto are top notch and Il Barroccio offers food to match.

Johnny’s OFF LICENSE Liquor Store, Rome

Located at Via Veio, 4 , near the San Giovanni metro station in Rome, Italy is the greatest beer and wine store around. The staff at Johnny’s OFF LICENSE are super knowledgable about the processes and tastes of their products and offer an awesome selection, especially beers.

You can drink on the streets in Rome, so you go in and buy yourself a coldie and simply enjoy it out front while talking with other beer professors. Much local knowledge can be learned from respectable folks at these street meetings, i.e. restaurant recommendations, train and bus info, etc.

These guys at Johnny’s OFF LICENSE are a hospitable bunch and even gave me a beer book to read while traveling. (3 Sheets to the Wind, Pete Brown)
This place is a must if you are tired of feeling like a tourist at the hotel. Tell them the Dude of Food sent ya.

The Dude of Food lunches at McGraw’s Tucson Cantina in AZ

The Dude of Food went to visit Tucson, AZ. After mom’s haircut we went to lunch at this place on the bluff. As you can see be the accompanying photo the view from McGraw’s Cantina is amazing. The tables on the outside patio look south over the east Tucson valley. If a gang of the old west outlaws was riding in from New Mexico or up from Mexico, you would see them way before they would see you from here.

The place opened at 11 and they had a Tucson blonde ale on tap. The McGraw’s Cantina menu is full of good things to choose from and the two girls working there were nice. It turns out McGraw’s hosts a steak night special on tuesdays. This place is a party waiting to happen.

Mom ordered a burger that looked awesome and a coke the waitress was happy to refill. The Dude of Food asked for the BBQ Tri-Tip sandwich and another Tucson blonde ale. The food was really good.

There are many restaurants in Tucson but McGraw’s Cantina may host one of the best. They have a lot of party space plus plenty of parking and would make an awesome place to do an Arizona Octoberfest BBQ rager.

If you don’t know about this spot then you probably shouldn’t, but I have to tell you that after my last trip to Mexico I have become a big fan of the michelada.

It just so happens that they make a good one here. Pricey but good.

The 50 year anniversary party was awesome.

L’escapade – A Fontainbleau Bistro, France

On May 1, 2014 I found my myself in
Fontainbleau, France enjoying a holiday called May day. The only people who have to work on May day are the restaurant employees so I went to this bistro down the street from Napolean’s house called L’escapade and tried some rum from Martinique.

Staff is friendly & the food is delicious. Go here!

As I walked the 65 miles or so around town I could feel my energy getting lower.

I needed to eat and when in Rome you do as the romans so, in this case french,

I decided I needed wine with my lunch. The Captains Croc provided me with a

delicious plate of salmon pasta in cream sauce and some wine to help keep me going.

If you are in the area then I recommend you walk over and eat lunch here. You won’t be disappointed by the food, prices or friendly service.

Santa Monica Pizza – Paris, France

At the web site listed below you may find the information to the first sign I saw upon arriving in the Paris underground metro. Exiting the Métro at Place des Fêtes and having just left Santa Monica you can imagine the surprise this sign caught me by. I laughed and knew I must go check it out.

After traveling for 14 hours I was ready to drop my bags off, eat and wander around Paris. The pizzeria was closed so I didn’t eat there until the second night of my stay and found Ismail and the staff to be friendly and hospitable. Thank you.
