Wake up and love Butter Cafe in Munich!

o

https://www.yelp.com/biz/butter-münchen

According to Dude Food G. on Yelp, this Butter place found on Blutenburg Strasse in Nuehausen, Munich is really cool. You know right from the beginning that this is not your normal everyday cafe. Butter is the diamond in the ruff waiting to be discovered. This place has babies, art, coffees, music, food and is full of life’s positive vibrations. These guys are a couple of psychologists dressed as music loving ravers.

If you just need a coffee to blow out the cobwebs from the previous nights Augustiner Helles, then Butter is perfect. If you need a veggie or meaty sandwich to go with your coffee than Butter is perfect. If you need a ginger, apple, carrot fresh juice than Butter is perfect. If you need a shoulder to cry on and a doorway to block than Butter is probably not for you.

Stop in and say “Aloha dudes” to the guys from Butter from the Dude of Food.

Learn about Apples with the Dude of Food

apples

The Dude of Food is one of those folks that really had no idea there are so many varieties of apples to choose from. I read in National Geographic that apples have been modified by grafting for the last 100 years. I do know that apples are sprayed with edible wax before they get to the market for preservation.

For example who knows the difference between a Benton Red and a Blue Pearmain apple? There are Scott Winters, Seek No Further, Esopus Spitzenburg, Zabergau, Empire, Twenty Ounce, Wolf River, Ribston Pippin, Opalescent, Nodhead, Deane 9 ounce, Wagner, Rolfe, Starkey and Orange Pippin’s. That is a list of some names of just the red apples!

In green apples you can choose from Winter Banana, Bramley’s Seedling, Tolman Sweet, Stark, Calville Blanc d’hiver, Pound Sweet, Gary Pearmain, Rhode Island Greening, Crisps, Granny Smith’s and more!

Then you get into the mixed green and red apples!  Whew, the Dude of Food is thinking about having an apple martini right now.

Apples are a food that have been grafted and modified for years and who knew? The Dude of Food now wonders if avocados are the similar?

The Dude of Food hangs out at Third Street Aleworks in Santa Rosa

This place is cool.  Not all crowded like the Russian River bar.  Third Street Aleworks has a cool staff, good beers and they also make a good pizza.

The Dude of Food finds the best pizza in Europe, at the Dusseldorf airport!

Zigolini Pizza

The Dude of Food had just left Munich. It was with a painful heart that he dragged himself away from Minga, a city that he loves. He had prepared for the long flight back to LA by staying up all night on his last visit in town before he left. He knew he had a 1 1/2 hour layover in Dusseldorf Airport’s Terminal ‘C’. Upon arrival to Gate 32 Terminal C a vision similar to an oasis housing a food mermaid revealed itself to this hungry traveler. A restaurant at the next gate (34 Terminal B) had a sign announcing food and beer that read Zigolini.

This small restaurant named Zigolini offered some good looking pastas and pizza for a reasonable price. The Dude of Food asked for a large beer. The guy next to me received a veggie pizza and that was it. I took one look and needed a pizza also. I asked for a sausage and bacon pizza. There is no exaggeration in saying that this may be one of the best pizzas ever!

zigolini2

The next time I flew through Dusseldorf it was a no brainer to go back. Zigolini was still there waiting for me in all her delicious glory. The only thing that was different was the sign now reads Marche. You can read more about Marche at http://www.marche-restaurants.com.

champ

Muhamad Ali, the head chef and designer, personally told the Dude of Food that the restaurant is still called Zigolini even though the sign has changed. The receipt still reads Zigolini. Chef Ali has one of the best secret recipes ever and is a sweet guy that loves sharing with his customers. His pizzas are simply amazing and he will happily add the ingredients you may want if you don’t see the combination you like on the menu.

This pizza was better than nearly all I’ve ever had in Firenze, Rome, Germany, New York, Chicago, LA or maybe even ever! Certainly this is the Best Valued and Best Tasting Airport Food that the Dude of Food has ever encountered. If you are ever near the Dusseldorf airport and have some time to kill, the Dude of Food highly recommends that you go see for yourself about the pizza at Zigolini Italian Food and chef Muhammad Ali.

If you happen to be visiting the incredible city of Florence, Italy and are hungry for a piece of pizza then get yourself over to Pizzeria del Duomo next to the Duomo church. This is the place! The staff is hospitable, they make great food and have tables out front in the plaza to sit and enjoy your slices. Be sure to try the meatball pizza. I love this place and went to visit daily. Motto grazie.

“Saibling, Char, whatever. Steckerlfisch is awesome!”, the Dude of Food.

If you like fish, especially salmon then you’ll most likely love Saibling fish, also known as Char. It is a lake fish once forbidden to be eaten by all Bavarians, except King Ludvig himself. It’s referred to by some as ‘the Kings fish’. A heavy penalty would come to those caught stealing the King’s fish.

Munich vendors in the local beer gardens have these grills designed so they can put a fish with a stick running through the center of it in a good spot to cook over the charcoals. Make sure to visit these fish vendors, set up in the beer gardens, as they are worth checking out. Get yourself a date, a masse of beer each, a bowl of obatzda to share, a pretzel and your choice of stick fish in paper and set up at a table with your friends and enjoy the fun. You won’t be disappointed. The English Garden is really nice and one of the largest urban parks in the world. The Hirschgarten is 2 hectares in area, dates back to 1791 and has deer’s in it. There are numerous beer gardens of various sizes all over town and all worth visiting.

When south of Munchen, in Sindelsdorf, on farmer’s market day you will most likely find a vendor selling freshly smoked Saibling fish. The Dude of Food says run, don’t walk, to this vendor and get the biggest fish you can choose. I cannot speak for the Forelle, which is supposed to be ‘as good’ but never sells out as fast as the saibling fish. The third common fisch you will see is Mackerel which are also really good. Personally, I think Saibling is the best and I love the town of Sindelsdorf. Oida Sindelsdorf family und prost. Vielen danke und liebe. Ein prosit, ein prosit . . .

Steckerlfisch can be eaten for breakfast, brotzeit, lunch, dinner or while sleep walking at night and is best consumed with cold German Helles Bier. Get some!

It’s better than ice cream!

The Dude of Food meets Off The Shelf catering and likes it!

Good food is what fuels good thoughts in good creative people which is what the Dude of Food happens to be. It’s when the middle managed, mucky mucks and bean counters sitting in the offices eating their favorite foods from their favorite restaurants decide to save $80. on crew lunch cost by budget cutting catering costs for the hard working stage crew that catches the attention of folks and creates division in the ranks. Caterers are painted into a corner and forced to try and prepare healthy meals on a peanut butter and jelly budget.

1guys

The creative chef, Yossi Faigenblat, worked for Dustin Hoffman as the actors private chef. The food was ‘All That’ and Hoffman encouraged chef Yossi to get into the catering game. That was in 2003. They opened a craft service /catering company for the movie industry. The kitchen line up has changed over the years and Off The Shelf has grown and now operates a couple trucks in New York and a few more in Los Angeles. Off The Shelf has both catering trucks and craft service trucks so their awesome creative food can be shared with all of the folks behind the scenes that make the actors playgrounds look so fabulous.

In Feb 9, 2010 Saveur magazine did an article (issue # 127) on movie industry catering companies that included Off The Shelf’s quality food preparation. The link below will take you there.

OTS is not cheap but will do wonderful things with the budget you have. The goal at Off The Shelf as told to the Dude of Food is ‘high end quality food and making people smile’ and this is something the folks at OTS catering are doing quite well. The Dude of Food would like to personally say ‘Thank you OTS and keep up the great work.”

Off The Shelf can be located at the following web address.   http://www.otscatering.com/

The Dude of Food

The Dude of Food made yummy stuffed grapes.

stuffed grapes 2

The Dude of Food made these stuffed grapes and it was easy.  Just crush raisins, dates, dried apricot, prunes, honey, Nutella, peanut butter, a little good jam and some oats all together into a paste and you’ll get a rough wet version of a Cliff bar. Then take some large washed grapes and slice them in half. Smash a small spoonful of the Cliff bar type mixture on top of the grape halves and enjoy a tasty treat. It’s yummy.
